Background
SOEC was founded in 1898, by Old Boys of King Edward VI School Stourbridge with the original idea of establishing a football team and it was on the initiative of Archie Chappell, Frank Cooper and Ernest Taylor that the idea became reality. The draft rules were adopted and the first executive committee elected on 12th September 1898. As the oldest Old Boy, Dr Alfred Freer a highly respected local G.P. was elected the first President.
SOEC has had three ‘homes’ since its formation. The first, opened in November 1898, was located above what is now the Paper Palace in Lower High Street. In those early days ‘The Club’ had little in the way of facilities and served simply as a meeting place. A billiards table was installed in 1900 but a bar serving alcoholic drinks was not a feature until 1909. Expansion in the 1920s led to the acquisition of Dane Tree House in Victoria Street (adjacent to B&Q) which was occupied from December 1931 until town centre redevelopment forced the move in 1973 to the present purpose built building, Dane Tree Court, located at the end of Drury Lane off Market Street, (opposite Blunts shoe shop), Stourbridge.
The Club continues to serve as a meeting place for members and their guests to meet socially or on business. Facilities today include a bar, lounges, morning and evening news-papers, TV and five snooker tables.
Snacks and meals are available at lunchtime and in the evenings and there are prestigious facilities for formal dining.
Opening HoursWith the exception of Christmas Day and Bank Holidays, the Club premises are open to members from 10.30 a.m. to 11.45 p.m. each day, Monday to Saturday.
The bar operates normal licencing hours i.e. 11.30a.m. - 2.30p.m. & 5.30p.m. - 11.00.p.m. (Monday-Friday) and 11.30 - 3.30pm & 7.30 - 11.00pm (Saturdays).
DressAs might be expected of a gentleman’s club good standards of dress and behaviour are taken for granted. Once upon a time jacket and tie was de rigeur and still is with some members, but smart casual is more the norm today. However jeans, denim, teeshirts and trainers are definitely out!
Other ActivitiesUPCOMING ROSES, a wine tasting evening with supper will be held on 30th June 06 from 7.30. The focus will be on Rose Wines and will cost £22.50 per head. For further details please contact Gerald at the Club or Alan Cutler.
